“Papa.”

“Papa?”

Sky opened his eyes; then he saw Charlie standing there. “What’s up, Charlie-girl?”

“I want my daddy. Can I come sleep with you?”

He nodded and opened his arms. She’d been riled up, and today was Thanksgiving. She had new fathers, new grandparents, and everyone was excited. “Come on up, honey.”

She crawled up, and he cuddled her in, pulling the blankets up over their heads. “I love you, Papa.”

“I love you, Charlie. So much. Are you excited about Thanksgiving?”

“I’m excited about cimminom rolls.”

“Oh, me too.”

She tapped his chin. “What does Thanksgiving mean?”

“Do you know about being thankful?”

She shook her head.

“Thankful is when things are good, when people make things better—there’s a feeling in your heart that says, ‘That was good.’ That’s thankful.” He grinned at her, hoping he was getting through. He thought he could, because he knew all about being thankful. He was a lucky bastard, and he gave thanks most every day. “Thanksgiving is where you have good food and think about that feeling in your heart. Like I’m thankful for you and Bubba and Pappy and Granny and Grampa.”

“What about Bruiser and Walter and Violet and Apple?”

She got it. She so got it. “And Apple and Violet and Walter and Bruiser. Absolutely.”

“I’m thankful for Walter even if he doesn’t know I love him yet.” She was so determined. “He will.”

“Yes, ma’am. He will. He just needs to figure out how.” Maybe. Maybe Walter would just glare at her until she was grown. He didn’t know.

Charlie yawned wide and settled hard against him. “I will be thankful tomorrow. I’m sleepy.”

Beckett chuckled low and soft. But didn’t interrupt.

“Sounds perfect, angel girl. I love you.”

“I love you, Papa. So much. Pappy too.”

He kissed the top of her head, giving thanks for his baby girl and his baby boy and his upcoming little one.

“Good night, sweetie,” Beck whispered. She muttered something back but was already almost asleep.

“Is she okay?”

“Just a lot of stuff going on, I think—she needed us.”

“She needed her cowboy. I get it.” Beck rolled over to face him. “It is a lot, though. She’s right about that.”

“Yeah. It is. Your mom wants to move here, did she tell you? I bet your sister is fixin’ to swallow her tongue.”

“Oh, she told you? Dad told me while I was showing him the car. Allison’s boys are older, I guess. And Dad hates Southern California.” Beck sighed. “So…what do you think?”

“I think that you and me have a life. I think that our world used to be one thing and now it’s another thing.” His family was gone or far away—his biological family, his cowboy family, and they would need help to raise these babies. Beck’s people loved Beckett, and they were gonna love these babies.

“Do you want that other thing to include my parents being around? Dad was definitely feeling me out.”

“They’re not bad people. If they want to be grandparents, isn’t that good?”

“I think so.” Beck rested a warm hand on his cheek. “And you should know…Dad and I had a talk.
